100 Year Old Modernisme

 

Last week I had the chance to check out the show “Barcelona and Modernity: Gaudi to Dali” at the Met.  It had a great swath of works by the artists and architects (Picasso, Gaudi, Dali, etc.) who made Barcelona a hub of Modernisme at the beginning of the last century, but what I enjoyed were the worked of Ramon Casas.


I don’t think I’d ever seen any of his works before, but now I’m enamoured.  This one’s called Self Portrait on a Bicycle and is a reference towards society moving towards the age of the factory (look at the rear left):


There was this one of an anarchist being executed; Garotte Vil:


And this great one of the poet Satie, entitled El Bohemio, Poet of Montmartre:
