Turns out that in order to burn as little fuel as possible when you launch a rocket into space (a serious problem), they try to launch them as close as possible to the equator.  (Earth&#039;s linear velocity is highest there)

Merritt is pretty far south.

Now add to that the fact that it&#039;s on the Ocean and you fire a rocket Eastward (as the world turns that way), and, should an accident occur, the debris will fall out to see rather than over the continental U.S.

So, alas, there&#039;s a good reason to put the damn thing there...</description>
