Beauty in Industry

Shortly after I moved to Toronto for the first time, I walked into the digital printing company while exploring the galleries of 80 Spadina.  As I walked in I was blown away by a photo that was better than all the other art in the building.  It turns out that it was a photo of a marble quarry in Carrara, Italy by Edward Burtynsky.

Years later I went to an amazing photography exhibit where the artist had captured the state-sponsored and orderly destruction of entire towns in order to build the Three Gorges Dam in China.  Turns out this was also Burtynsky’s work.

Now Burtynsky’s back with a new work-a film exploring what he has seen and its impact on the world.  Called Manufactured Landscapes, the film is out now and available on DVD.
