Every now and then I hear about something going on in the medical profession that just blows my mind.
The above photo is of a robot designed to do biopsies in an MRI machine. MRI machines create massive magnetic fields, so nobody has operated in them as metal is verboten. However, the folks at John Hopkins get around this by creating a machine entirely out of plastic, ceramics and rubber.
To be further stupefied by the progress of modern medicine, check out this link (need Flash) to see how the victim of an industrial accident is able to control his new arms and actually sense what they’re doing. Also, this video is from 2005, so I shudder to think where they are now.
