Now I Get It

I don’t own a car.  I walk to work.  And as a result, I haven’t really understood the full impact of rising gas prices on average Americans.  Now, courtesy of this graphic in the New York Times, it’s much clearer.

Gas spending represents 5.2% of the spending of the average household - and that’s up 26.0% over the past year.  Incidentally, all the “reds” are fuel-related.  The next category of top increases - yellow - are either plane tickets (ergo fuel) or primarily food stuffs.

What’s way down in price?  Computers and women’s clothing.
